Brian McFadden’s new song Mistakes featuring real-time fiance Delta Goodrem may be all over radio this week, but don’t expect another collab any time soon.

Speaking exclusively with TMN, McFadden admits there’s little chance of collaboration given the separate musical paths the lovers-in-life are pursuing.

“We’ve tried to write some songs, but we’re clashing a bit more because our headspaces musically have gone in two different directions.”

Although McFadden contributed a fistful of songwriting credits to the 2007 Delta album, Mistakes is the pair’s first official single release since Almost Here, a #1 hit on the ARIA Singles chart in 2005.

“At the time of doing Delta and my last record Set in Stone, we were both close in our headspace of music,” says McFadden. “But I’ve gone completely for a synthetic, electro sound. Whereas she’s going back to her roots again. She’s gone more piano-oriented, which is almost ‘anti’ what’s happening at the moment in the industry.”

Mistakes is the third single from McFadden’s Top 30-charting album Wall Of Soundz, but it was initially intended as a solo track. That all changed on Goodrem’s suggestion that a female vocal would send the song into orbit.

“She came in and did a vocal and everyone just went crazy for it,” the former Westlife singer recalls. “Ironically,” he points out, “it’s a break-up song. It’s not even a love song. It’s a four-on-the-floor break-up song.”

With a #1 single to its credit (Just Say So), McFadden’s third solo album will be repackaged with bonus tracks for the Australian market, and will enjoy a staggered international roll-out through Universal Music Group later this year.

DELTA Goodrem has just thrown a glass of red wine in a fit of rage. The target the forehead of her fiance, Brian McFadden. Her aim is spot on.

A bleeding McFadden is eyeing off a chainsaw with a destructive glint in his eyes.

He’s swearing at her, she’s yelling at him. Then the director says “cut”.

The loved-up pair are playing combative lovers in the video for their duet Mistakes.

Loosely based on Brangelina’s Mr and Mrs Smith, the clip starts with a romantic dinner that triggers an explosive domestic dispute.

The pair may have the occasional argument, but this fictitious one is turbo-nuclear.

On set in Sydney last week, director Dan Reisinger is yelling obscenities at Goodrem to get her in the (war) zone for the fiery feud.

“It’s not every day Australia’s sweetheart gets called a f—-g b—-,”Reisinger laughs.

“I had to get her motivated.”

“The first word I said after ‘cut’ was sorry . . . before re-loading and letting her have it again.”

While Goodrem taps into her Logie-winning Neighbours days for angst-on-cue (“Brian’s like ‘I don’t want to offend you’ I’m going, ‘Come on!”‘), McFadden struggles to abuse his partner of six years.

“The happy bits are easy,” McFadden says, “trying to get each other riled up is hard.”

Reisinger, director of McFadden’s last two videos, closed the set after a string of failed takes.

“They are such private people when it comes to their relationship, which is why it is so successful,” Reisinger says.

“Brian was reluctant to hurt Delta’s feelings, particularly in front of strangers on set. She kept trying to reassure him it was just acting, but he couldn’ t bring himself to insult her where it hurts, a thing anyone’s partner knows better than anyone else.”

The words hurt, but McFadden is at ease with the string of button-pushing stunts.

Goodrem makes a digital smoothie when she throws his watch in a blender and smashes one of his platinum discs.

She uses the disc to slice his guitar (James Bond fan Reisinger’s nod to villian Oddjob) while he retaliates by using the chainsaw to turn Goodrem’s piano into firewood.

“Delta was genuinely traumatised by us doing that,” Reisinger says. “It was like us chainsawing the family pet.”

Goodrem, worried about instrument karma, admits it was like “a horror movie”.

“I feel physically sick,” she says. “When we finished the treatment the biggest issue I had with the whole video is the chainsawing of the piano.”

McFadden researched the lineage of the doomed instrument.

“There’ll be a lot of people -ed off we ruined a piano, but apparently the piano was in the graveyard and about to be destroyed anyway,” he says. “No real pianos were harmed in the making of this video.”

The duet, like their previous collaboration Almost Here, is anything but a love song.

“We don’t feel the need to express that in public,” Goodrem says.

“Privately we’re very romantic and very much in love.”

McFadden, meanwhile, is seeing how long it takes to microwave Goodrem’s teddy bear until it blows up a brand new Freedom kitchen.

“Everyone has their arguments,”he says. “This is the biggest one we’ll ever have! HEAR Mistakes (Universal) out September 17.

ONLY weeks ago, the rumour mill was in overdrive with whispers that Delta Goodrem’s relationship with boyfriend Brian McFadden was on the rocks.

But the songbird has confirmed the pair are fine, confirming she still wants to marry her longtime beau.

Goodrem, who recently flew back to Australia from London for the funeral of a close friend, has told New Idea she will still settle down with the former Westlife band member, but not just yet.

“It will happen one day, when everything is in place and the timing’s ideal,” Goodrem said.

But it’s been a bumpy ride for the pair, who started dating in 2004 after a music collaboration on the song Almost Here.

Before the rumours of tensions were the persistent claims that the couple hooked up before McFadden was officially separated from former wife Kerry Katona – a fact both McFadden and Goodrem have denied.

And it looks like it’s not just her love life that’s on the way up for the Born to Try singer, with all that work trying to crack the US music market looking like it’s paying off.

While her hopes for Stateside chart success have stalled, the songbird’s most successful song of last year, In This Life, was used for the So You Think You Can Dance America finale on Friday night.

The show, which had an average audience of 9.33 million – just in the States – is a huge exposure boost for the Aussie star, who is back working on her songwriting for her next album.

BRIAN McFadden has a message: He and Delta have been together for years, so give their relationship the respect it deserves.

It’s not a casual fling – prime fodder for the gossip pages. It’s a mature, serious romance between soulmates that will last the distance.

“It’s been five years now – people forget that,” says the 29-year-old former member of Irish boy band Westlife and presenter of Foxtel’s Football Superstar.

“They think we’ve been together for a year or two and it’s just a fling. They forget that we’re going to get married. We have a life together.”

The romance had tongues wagging from the start. McFadden had recently split from his wife, former Atomic Kitten singer Kerry Katona.

They have two daughters, Molly-Marie, 7, and Lilly-Sue, 5. They separated in September 2004 and were divorced in 2006.

Goodrem had come off a doomed relationship with tennis player Mark Philippoussis.

They endured weeks of tabloid scrutiny, with nasty gossip about whether the romance started before McFadden’s split with Katona.

Goodrem’s mother Lea weighed in, advising her daughter to end the relationship to focus on her career.

Goodrem stayed strong. “Every dream I have, we’re standing side by side, we laugh, we sing, we cry,” she wrote of McFadden in the sleeve notes on her album, Delta.

It was a trial by fire that McFadden says has only made the couple stronger and more determined to make the doubters eat their words.

“People obviously came down on me, going ‘He’s not right for her’,” McFadden says.

“They don’t know anything. We’ve got this massive life together. We spend 24 hours a day together – we do music together, we live together, we do everything together.

“We’re very happy and we just learn to forget what everyone else says about us. We know what we are. We’re very happy.”

Even now, the gossip hasn’t gone away. This week McFadden revealed that he and Goodrem were delaying their December wedding because of work.

He knew the media would immediately put two and two together and make five, and think their relationship was in trouble.

“We want to get married as soon as possible but we don’t have time to get married at the moment,” he says.

“We’ll get our albums out, go tour and then take six months off, get married, and go on a honeymoon for five months and enjoy it.

“We want it to be a celebration of our love. We just want to do it right and do it for us.

“The sad thing is that we almost have to get married to prove our love to people.

“As far as we’re concerned we’re already married. I spend more time with Delta than my dad spent with my mum in the 35 or 40 years they were together.”

McFadden says the relationship with Goodrem works because they balance each other.

He’s an Aries, she’s a Scorpio. He’s an extrovert, she’s an introvert. Most importantly, they are open to each other’s ideas, especially when it comes to creating songs.

“Delta brings stability – she’s the real centred one of the two of us,” he says. “I’ll go ‘Let’s do this’ and she’ll say ‘Hang on, let’s step back, take the situation in, weigh up the options and then make a decision’.

“My whole life, I’ve never been like that. I bring a bit of spontaneity to her that she didn’t have.

“Before I met her, if she was doing a gig, she’d wake up in the morning with the sweats, panicking about it.

“She wouldn’t go outside, she would be drinking tea and steaming to prepare her voice, working herself into a frenzy.

“Her rehearsal would be great but by the time she went on she’d be a little shaky because she’d worked herself into a nervous wreck.

“I would literally rock up five minutes before, have a cigarette, have a vodka and (sing) straight out. I wouldn’t even clear my throat.

“We’ve actually now started to come to the middle a bit more. Now she doesn’t start to panic until an hour before a show and I’ve started not to drink before a show.

“We’ve helped each other to find better places as performers.”

McFadden is still haunted by the fallout of his marriage to Katona, who has admitted to drug, alcohol and bipolar disorder battles.

McFadden denied reports last year that he was seeking full custody of his daughters. In 2007 Katona accused her former husband of using the children to further his career.

“It’s a shame Brian is so desperate he has to use me and the kids for coverage,” Katona reportedly said.

McFadden hasn’t held back, either.

Last year he told News of the World: “Kerry is a disgusting human being. She manipulates people and plays the sympathy card for every stupid mistake she makes.

“Me and my family have been put through hell by her stupid games.

“It (the responsibility of being a father) never goes away,” McFadden says. “My oldest is already on the internet reading stories. She’ll say ‘I read this online about you dad’ and she’s seven years old.

“Even a few years ago, if there was a front page story about me or their mother you could turn the paper over and it was fine but now they have the access we can’t stop. That’s my biggest fear.”

It is that shared pain that McFadden believes binds him and Goodrem together.

On July 8, 2003, Goodrem, then 18, revealed that she had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The star went through intensive chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

“We’re a comfort for each other,” McFadden says. “When we write for her album, we learn to tap into old pains.

“She must have so much bottled up from her cancer period. Her career had just begun and . . . bang. There’s a lot of built-up pain there. She’s had a lot of personal pain in her life as well with family and stuff like that and I have too.”

After marriage, the next step is children, but McFadden says that is still some time away.

“I’m turning 30 next year so it wouldn’t bother me but for her, the time’s not right,” he says. “Delta’s career got stopped by cancer and I don’t want her to lose another year to being pregnant.”

Tired of the ever-present paparazzi on their doorstep – but not of the local nosheries across the way – Delta Goodrem and fiancé Brian McFadden have packed up their fashionable Woolloomooloo apartment to move to the ‘burbs.

Confidential learned a removalist truck spent all day outside the couple’s Cowper Wharf Rd unit packing up the contents of their place on Wednesday while McFadden surveyed the scene from the cafe across the street.

Following weekend reports that the couple have delayed wedding plans until next year, we were happy to hear the songbirds are not leaving each other – just the celebrity-laden suburb that has been Goodrem’s home for more than five years.

It is believed the pair rented a house in Hunters Hill some weeks ago, test-driving the suburb with a view to buying thereabouts.

It would make the Goodrem-McFaddens neighbours to Cate Blanchett and Kyle Sandilands, a man who rents in the best places.

While a source close to the pair said they seek much-needed privacy, no doubt the strict “no pets” policy at the exclusive Loo complex also prompted them to find a big backyard for their pups Aspen and Vail, a pair of spoilt-looking papillion shih tzus who wouldn’t have responded to more Aussie names like Perisher and Smiggins.

Although McFadden was not on the scene until late 2004, Goodrem bought her pad in Woolloomooloo Bay a year earlier and, with Russell Crowe and radio king John Laws as neighbours, reportedly plans to keep it as an investment property.

“I can’t make a comment about their private living arrangements,” a spokeswoman said. “But I will say the couple are very happy.”

Irish pop star McFadden, a Finger Wharf fixture for some time, oversaw the removalists from the Sienna Marina Cafe across the road. Our spy saw him there at 3pm, beverage in hand, and still at 7pm. Hard work moving house.

Delta Goodrem will sing the national anthem at next week’s Grand Prix.

Goodrem will add star quality to the event – which is desperately needed after the cancellation of the celebrity race.

She is expected to be in Melbourne with her fiance, Brian McFadden.

The Grand Prix is the first major event to feel the effects of the global financial crisis.

Vodafone has cancelled its extravagant trackside marquee this year.

The company, however, will still throw an annual party to be held at Eureka bar on Saturday night.

Red Bull, a company famous for putting on million-dollar parties, is also downsizing and its trackside presence will not be as big as in previous years.

The last couple of years Mercedes-Benz has thrown its Star Lounge parties at Eureka, but this year it’s all at the track.

Mercedes-Benz will host a ladies’ lunch on Thursday and host a party after the race on Sunday.

Lewis Hamilton will attend the Tag Heur party at Bistro Guillaume on Thursday.

Guests who will be attending Sunday’s night’s party include Shane Warne, Michala Banas, Tim Campbell, Benjamin Hart, Angus Kennett, Hamish McLachlan, Naomi Robson, Jo Stanley, Brett Tucker, Rhys Ulrich and Kym Valentine.

Delta Goodrem looks set for a double celebration at the end of the year with her fiance, Brian McFadden, hinting the pair will marry in December.

“We’re looking at the end of the year, Christmas time, in Australia,” McFadden said in Ireland this week.

“During the next couple of weeks, we’ll definitely be setting a date.”

The pair have been engaged for more than a year.

McFadden has two daughters, Molly and Lily-Sue, to former wife Kerry Katona.

The singer arrived back in Australia yesterday morning and quickly caught up with Goodrem.

Goodrem became the proud owner of two tiny puppies this week and introduced the cute-as-pie balls of fluff to McFadden over breakfast.

The couple were totally absorbed by their new pups called Vail and Aspen, named after Goodrem’s favourite ski fields, as they strolled around Sydney yesterday.
