Delta With Prince William’s at his Royal Celebrity Lunch

UP TO 2000 people have filled the streets of Redfern to welcome Prince William today.

Locals and royal fans brought their flags and autograph books hoping to meet the future King.

In his first public appearance while in Sydney, William was cheered loudly by the 1500-plus crowd as he visited the Redfern Community Centre.

He was welcomed by a traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony before being taken inside to meet children.

“I’d like to thank Prince William for coming here to the Block today,” Charles Madden, director of the Aboriginal Medical Service in Redfern, said.

“It’s good to have him here because The Block has produced a lot of positive things for Redfern.

“Redfern isn’t the bad place people make it out to be.”

Prince William arrived at the 10 minute ceremony about 15 minutes late, but the crowd was not disappointed.

“I was told we were running on palace time but we are running on Koori time,” one woman in the crowd said.

The mostly Aboriginal crowd clapped and cheered as the 27-year-old heir to the throne arrived.
One woman, Barbara Selby, brought a large photo of the late Princess Diana meeting her daughter and grandson when she was in Sydney in 1997 to open the Victor Chang building at St Vincent’s Hospital in 1997.

“I’d like William to see it,” she said.

Lewis Kelly, from Kempsey on the NSW mid-north coast, was among the crowds with his nephew, Dennis Wright, of Moree.

“We’re over the moon that he’s come to this part of the city to spend time with us,” he said.

“I was surprised when I heard it on the grapevine that he was coming here to see the indigenous people, the real Australians.”

Prince William gave the crowd a brief wave when the ceremony was over, and was ushered inside the community centre, where he was to meet with elders and children.

Earlier in the day Australian sporting legends gathered at Admiralty House for a star studded lunch with Prince William.

Guests mingled on the lawn before enjoying a meal which included salmon with salad, a main of Angus beef, followed by petit fours, mini pavlovas and finger lamingtons.

Wallabies captain Rocky Elsom, Test cricketer Michael Clarke, and Olympic gold medallists Libby Trickett and Matthew Mitcham, actor Lucy Durack, University of Tasmania research fellow Sharon Andrews and NSW Young Australian of the Year 2010 Jack Manning Bancroft and pop star Delta Goodrem were among the young Australians who dined with the prince.

“I love the fact they’ve invited a lot of young people. There’s a real mix from all walks of life,” Goodrem said.

She said the British royal family lead exceptional lives.

“You always have the respect that their lives must be an amazing experience. You just want to pay your respect to that and to him,” she added.

She recommended the prince visit Taronga Zoo if he has any spare time during his two-day Sydney visit.

The prince was overheard talking about his admiration for Australian sport to Michael Clarke, the vice-caption of Australia’s Test cricket team.

He also described the view from Admiralty House across the harbour as “thrilling” and waved to passing ferry passengers.

Trickett, who drove holding the invitation, beaming from ear to ear as she flashed it to police security.

“I am just excited to be a part of such an amazing group of people,” she said.

“I am really honoured to have been invited.”

Clarke just flashed his face to waiting police as he drove through in a hire car.

Among them was Deakin University student Browyn O’Gorman, 22, who lost her home in Kinglake in the Black Saturday bushfires.

“It is very exciting, I don’t know what to expect, I know everyone will be really nice,” she said.

Commonwealth Govenor-General Quentin Bryce, who was the host of the royal lunch, saw Gorman featured on a TV documentary about the fires and personally chose her to attend.

A military helicopter and hercules pilot were also invited to the event.

A crowd of 60 gathered to see Prince William outside Admiralty House before Governor-General Quentin Bryce led him into sign the visitor’s book, which he did with his left hand.

“All the best are left handed,” the prince told Ms Bryce.

Prince William also waved comfortably to Sydney ferry passengers as he arrived.

Jean Fittler, 86, came from Cowra in the state’s Cenral-West and waited two hours for a glimpse of the Prince who waved and flashed a smile at the crowd as his car streaked in.

“We were just so excited, my heart was just pounding, he was so close it was lovely.”

Ellie Money, 11, is from England but lives in Pymble and she thought the Prince was handsome.

“I think they should have put down the window and let us have a bit of a chat. it’s not going to harm him if we just say hello.”

The Prince stepped off his Royal New Zealand Air Force flight after a 20 minute delay today at 12.15pm.

Before he left the plane he thanked the pilot and cabin crew, and appeared happy as he emerged smiling in a dark blue suit.

Last time William was here, he was just eight-months-old and cradled in the arms of his mother, the late Princess Diana.

Now the second-in-line to the throne is travelling unaccompanied and visits Sydney as part of an unofficial tour Down Under.

Tight security surrounds the Prince who has been whisked away in a motorcade to Admiralty House, Kirribilli, where he will lunch with Ms Bryce.

Later this afternoon, the inner-west community of Redfern will throw open its doors to welcome William who will meet with Aboriginal elders and children.

But for the best chance to see the popular royal, the public has been invited to Mrs Macquarie’s chair tomorrow where the Prince’s motorcade will enter before he walks to a barbecue held in the Royal Botanic Gardens, just before 1pm.

“While this is an unofficial visit, the best opportunity for members of the public to see Prince William will be tomorrow afternoon,” Premier Keneally said.

“The public are invited to see the Prince’s motorcade at Mrs Macquarie’s chair tomorrow and I recommend that people are in position before 1pm.

“He will leave the motorcade to enter the Royal Botanic Gardens by foot to join guests at a barbeque in his honour.”

His visit comes as an exclusive poll conducted by Newspoll found that 58 per cent wanted William, and not his father, Charles, to take the place of Queen Elizabeth.

Meanwhile, NSW Premier Kristina Keneally admitted finding Prince William charming during their brief meeting, but says it hasn’t dented her republican views.

Ms Keneally greeted the second in line to the throne shortly after he touched down at Sydney Airport.

She shook hands with the prince rather than curtseying and chatted briefly to the future king before his motorcade whisked him across the city for his lunch with Governor-General Quentin Bryce at Admiralty House.

“Prince William was in fact very charming. He was very delighted to be in Sydney,” Ms Keneally told reporters.

“I had a brief chat with him about his visit to Redfern this afternoon (and) clearly he was quite keen to have that opportunity to meet with Aboriginal elders and Aboriginal young people.”

Asked whether Australia should become a republic, the American-born premier proudly declared herself a republican.

“I am a republican, but I do believe that Prince William is a young man of great character,” Ms Keneally said.

“He is a passionate campaigner for many causes, and particularly has used his position to highlight the need of disadvantaged young people.

“It’s very lovely to have him in our city.”

Delta Goodrem’s ‘Christmas Carols & Hit’s Sydney Opera House show set to be held at the Concert Hall on Sunday December 6th has been rescheduled to Christmas Eve, Thursday December 24, 2009. The change of date is due to an allergic reaction from medication given for the treatment of a cold. Goodrem has been instructed by a treating physician to remain in the US to rest and is therefore unable to return to Australia this weekend.

To all her fans who bought tickets to the show, Delta has sent this message;

“To my dear friends and fans, I am extremely disappointed to tell you that I have to postpone my Opera House show this Sunday after being instructed to remain away and rest. Please hold onto your tickets and I promise to share a special night of music on Christmas Eve.”
