POP singer Delta Goodrem has apologised to her fans for postponing a Sydney concert, blaming a herbal remedy for her bout of ill health.
”It was unfortunate – I didn’t just cancel lightly. I wasn’t able to do it. My body wasn’t able to do it,” said Goodrem, who has returned to Australia from the US for her rescheduled concert at the Opera House on Christmas Eve.
An unknown number of ticket-holders have sought refunds because the concert is so close to Christmas.
”I know in my heart that my first priority is always the fans,” the 25-year-old said. ”I wanted to make sure that I would be there for them but I couldn’t do it after what happened.”
The singer revealed how a herbal remedy for colds made her unwell in the US. She had symptoms of an allergic reaction during a tour with opera singers including Andrea Bocelli. ”I asked some opera singers I was touring with and they recommended something for a cold, just a herbal thing, so I took it … and then I woke up and I’d had some sort of reaction. There was a rash and my voice had closed over.”
The singer, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2003, said she wasn’t taking any chances with her health: ”I have to watch my immune system very closely. And it does take me a little bit more, when I get something simple, to get rid of it.”
Goodrem is back in Sydney with her fiance and fellow performer Brian McFadden – although he will fly back to his native Ireland over Christmas to visit his two daughters from his marriage to Kerry Katona.
Goodrem said she and McFadden were still planning their wedding.
”We feel that it’s definitely on its way. But we’re like any couple, we want things in place beforehand. Like any couple who wants to save up and do things, we want to make sure everything’s in place in our lives.”
